A March 2026 JAMA Network Open study by Eva H. Telzer and Kayla Burnell tracked smartphone use among 79 youths ages 11 to 18. Using iPhone screen-time reports across 14 days, the researchers found that participants used smartphones during every hour of the school day and spent an average of 2.22 school-day hours on their phones. More frequent checking was associated with poorer cognitive control, the self-regulation skill learners need to inhibit impulses, stay with a task, and work toward a goal.
The finding matters because it shifts attention away from total screen time alone. A learner who checks a phone dozens of times may fragment attention even if each check is short. That pattern fits a broader wave of school-phone research. A May 2026 National Bureau of Economic Research working paper evaluated lockable phone-pouch policies across U.S. schools. The study found that strict pouch adoption reduced school-day phone use, but the first years did not produce large improvements in test scores, attendance, or several other outcomes. Taken together, the news is more nuanced than “phones destroy learning” or “bans do nothing.” Phones can clearly compete with attention, and reducing access can reduce use.
