A new sleep report gives parents a useful warning before the next exam season: test preparation is not only about how many practice questions a student finishes. It is also about whether the student’s brain has enough sleep to stabilize what was practiced.

On May 12, 2026, the University of Minnesota reported that today’s teens are sleeping less than ever before. The research, published in Pediatrics, used Monitoring the Future survey data from more than 400,000 U.S. students in grades 8, 10, and 12 from 1991 through 2023. The headline finding was stark: sleep has declined across age groups, and among older teens, as few as 22% reported getting at least seven hours of sleep per night.

That matters for learning because seven hours is already below the usual adolescent recommendation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says high school students who do not get at least eight hours of sleep have insufficient sleep. A consensus statement from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends 8 to 10 hours per 24 hours for teenagers and links regular adequate sleep with better attention, learning, memory, and emotional regulation.

What Happened

The Minnesota study is important because it is not a one-school snapshot or a short-term survey. It looks across more than three decades of nationally representative student data. Researchers found that teen sleep has steadily declined, that older students are hit hardest, and that sleep disparities have widened for Black and Latino adolescents and for students whose parents have less education.

At the same time, sleep and memory research is becoming more specific about why this should concern families during test preparation. A 2026 review in Physiological Reviews, Sleep’s contribution to memory formation, summarizes a large body of work showing that sleep is an active state for forming long-term memory, not just a break from learning. The practical story is straightforward. Students often treat sleep as the flexible part of an exam plan: finish the review packet, keep rereading notes, stay up for another practice test, and recover later. The evidence points in the opposite direction. Sleep is part of the learning process itself.

Why It Matters

Memory has stages. Students first encode information while studying, solving problems, listening in class, or explaining an idea. Then the brain has to stabilize, organize, and connect that information so it is easier to retrieve later. Sleep supports that later work. When sleep is shortened, the student may still have spent time studying, but the study session has a weaker chance of becoming durable learning.

This is especially important for tests because tests require retrieval under pressure. A tired student may recognize material while looking at notes but fail to bring it back accurately during a quiz, essay, lab practical, or math exam. Sleep loss also makes attention and emotional regulation worse, which means the student is more likely to misread questions, abandon multi-step problems, or panic after one hard item.

Parents should also notice the equity issue in the Minnesota findings. If some students have less control over evening schedules, transportation, work responsibilities, caregiving, noise, housing stability, or school start times, “just go to bed earlier” is not a complete answer. But families can still protect the sleep that is within their control by planning study time earlier and treating the night before a test as consolidation time, not emergency learning time.

The learning conclusion is simple: do not let test preparation steal the sleep that makes preparation stick. Parents can help by shifting from last-night volume to earlier, spaced, retrieval-based practice.

  • Move the hardest practice earlier. Put problem solving, self-quizzing, essay outlining, and flashcard recall before the final evening. The night before a test should be for light retrieval, organizing materials, and sleep.
  • Use sleep as a study deadline. Set a stopping time that protects at least eight hours in bed for high school students whenever possible. If the student is still unprepared at that time, choose a short targeted review instead of another full study cycle.
  • Replace rereading with retrieval. A 20-minute self-quiz followed by checking errors is usually more useful than another hour of highlighting. Retrieval tells the student what is actually available from memory.
  • Keep an error list, not a panic list. Before bed, write down the three to five errors most likely to appear again, the corrected method, and one example. This gives the next morning a clear focus.
  • Protect the last 30 minutes. Use the final half hour for low-stimulation routines: pack the bag, charge the calculator, set alarms, and stop argument-heavy or screen-heavy studying. The goal is to make sleep easier, not to add more stress.
  • Use the morning for cues, not cramming. A brief review of formulas, key terms, or the error list can help. A long new-learning session on test morning usually signals that the plan started too late.

For parents, the useful question is not “Did you study enough hours?” A better question is: “Did you practice remembering, correct the most important errors, and leave enough sleep for your brain to keep the learning?” That question turns sleep from a reward after studying into a core part of test preparation.
