Many learners turn notes into study questions by copying headings, definitions, or bold words. That is a start, but it often produces prompts that are too easy. A learner may recognize a term on a flashcard, repeat a sentence from the textbook, and still struggle when asked to explain the idea, compare it with a related idea, use it in a new example, or solve a problem with it.

Teachers and tutors can improve learning by changing the shape of review questions. A review sheet filled only with definitions may help students start, but it rarely shows whether they can use the material.
A stronger review set includes several prompt types:
- Core recall: What is the term, rule, date, formula, claim, or process?
- Explanation: Why does it work, matter, or happen?
- Comparison: How is it different from a related idea?

Adult self-learners often study from tutorials, manuals, videos, articles, or work documents. The danger is passive completion: watching the lesson, copying the steps, and assuming the skill has been learned.
After each learning session, adult learners can write five prompts:
- What is the main idea or procedure I need to remember?
- Why does this step, rule, or decision matter?
- What is a similar concept or tool that I should not confuse with it?
- What is a realistic workplace example where I would use it?
- What would change if the context, data, audience, or goal changed?

The first mistake is writing prompts that are too broad. “Explain World War II” or “Understand fractions” is not a useful study task. Narrow the prompt so the learner knows what thinking to do: “Why did rationing affect daily life during World War II?” or “How is one-third different from three wholes?”
The second mistake is writing prompts that are too close to the notes. If the prompt uses the exact same wording and asks for the exact same sentence back, it may support memorization but not flexible understanding. Add a new example, changed condition, or comparison.
The third mistake is checking too quickly. If the learner looks at the answer after two seconds, the brain has little reason to retrieve. Try first, then check. Even an imperfect attempt makes feedback more useful.
The fourth mistake is keeping only the prompts that feel easy. Easy prompts can build confidence, but deeper learning also needs questions that expose weak spots. A good set includes some quick recall and some effortful application.
A practical rule to remember
Do not ask only, “What does this mean?” Ask, “Why does it work, how is it different, what is a new example, and where else could I use it?”
Better study prompts turn notes into active practice. They help learners move from recognizing words to explaining ideas, from remembering examples to creating new ones, and from studying for the next question to preparing for real understanding.
