Recent research on academic pressure is sending a direct message to anyone who helps students prepare for tests: better preparation should lower threat, not simply add more pressure in the name of rigor. The useful response is not to abandon practice tests, retrieval practice, or demanding review. It is to redesign them so students get repeated, low-stakes chances to remember, correct, and improve before the real assessment matters.
The clearest news signal comes from a 2026 University College London report on a longitudinal study of 4,714 adolescents from the Children of the 90s cohort. The study was observational, so it does not prove that exam pressure alone caused later mental-health outcomes. It is also an emotional-design problem: how do learners experience the work they are asked to do?

That combination should change the design of test preparation. The goal is not to make students feel comfortable every moment. Productive learning still involves effort, uncertainty, and mistakes. The goal is to keep practice from becoming a constant threat signal. Students should be able to miss an answer, learn from it, and try again without feeling that each error defines their ability.

Stress changes study behavior. A calm student may use practice questions to diagnose gaps. A threatened student may avoid questions, reread notes passively, hide weak areas, or cram late because delay temporarily reduces anxiety.
