Recent education news is making one point hard to avoid: students are already using AI for homework, but many adults and students are unsure when that use supports learning and when it replaces it. The practical response should not be a simple ban or a vague invitation to “use AI responsibly.” Homework now needs clearer design so students still retrieve knowledge, explain their thinking, and meet enough difficulty to grow.
A 2026 RAND American Youth Panel report found that AI use for homework among students in middle school and above rose from 48 percent in May 2025 to 62 percent in December 2025. The same report found that 67 percent of students agreed that more AI use for schoolwork would harm critical thinking, a notable rise from earlier in 2025. That combination matters: many students are using AI even while worrying that it may weaken the very skill schoolwork is supposed to build.
Parents and teens are also divided. Education Week, reporting on a Common Sense Media survey, noted that 52 percent of teens said AI use for assignments is innovative and should be encouraged, while 52 percent of parents said relying on AI to complete assignments is unethical. In a separate June report, Education Week described students turning to AI before adults for help and pointed to a guidance gap: many students have heard rules about AI use, but fewer have been taught how to judge AI accuracy or safety.
The policy response is accelerating. In Illinois, the State Board of Education released a large AI guidance document after lawmakers required statewide advice for schools. That puts homework in a new position. If an assignment only asks for a polished paragraph, a finished worksheet, or a correct answer, AI can often produce the visible product while the learner avoids the invisible work. The danger is cognitive offloading: the student hands the mental effort to the tool, then receives a result that looks like learning but does not leave much memory, judgment, or fluency behind.
At the same time, AI is not automatically harmful. A student who asks for a hint, checks a misconception, compares two explanations, or receives feedback after making an attempt may be using AI to extend practice. The design problem is to separate those two uses before homework begins.
Why It Matters
Homework has always carried a measurement problem: a teacher sees the submitted work, not every step that produced it. AI makes that gap larger. A learner can now move from confusion to a finished answer without doing retrieval, self-explanation, error correction, or sustained problem solving. - Give families the same language. Parents need a simple rule they can reinforce: AI may help after the student has tried, explained, and checked. It should not replace the first act of thinking.
The latest AI reliance concerns should change homework design because the old assumption no longer holds. A completed assignment is no longer strong evidence that the learner practiced the target skill. Better homework now protects retrieval, explanation, feedback, and productive struggle first, then uses AI as a support only after those learning actions have happened.
