A Complete Example
Imagine a student studying algebra. The student tries a linear equation and rates confidence as 4. The answer is wrong. The error is not a missing formula; the student subtracted from one side but not the other. Because confidence was high, the next move is not simply more practice. The student needs to compare their reasoning with a correct example and write the misconception: “I treated the equation like an expression instead of keeping both sides balanced.”
Now imagine the same student tries another problem, uses the correct steps, and gets the answer right but rates confidence as 2. The next move is retrieval practice with a few similar problems after short delays. The student is not lost; the skill is just not fluent yet.
Finally, imagine the student faces a word problem and cannot decide what equation to write. More review of solving steps will not fix the decision problem.
